At the Australian Open Russia's Nadia Petrova has booked a place in the last eight after beating Svetlana Kuznetsova.
The 19th seed needed all three sets to endure her higher seed compatriot’s onslaught.
Petrova took the tough opening set 6-3, but then lost the second by the same scoreline.
In the final set Petrova displayed more confidence and breezed it 6-1.
Petrova will play unranked wild-card entry Justine Henin in the quarterfinals after the former world No. 1 beat fellow Belgian Yanina Wickmayer 7-6, 1-6, 6-3. This is Henin’s first Grand Slam tournament in two years.
Elsewhere, another all-Russian clash between Maria Kirilenko and second seed Dinara Safina was interrupted due to Safina’s injury. Thus, Kirilenko marches on in Melbourne, while Safina has to once again leave behind her Grand Slam dreams.
Meanwhile, in the men's action, second seed Rafael Nadal is through to the quarter-finals after overcoming mammoth Croat Ivo Carlovic in four sets. Nadal took the first, but dropped the second before claiming the third and fourth, with every set result 6-4.
