Andy Murray tamed battling Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga to reach the Montreal Masters final and replace Spain's Rafael Nadal as world number two. He will take on Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro in the final.
Andy Murray was looking to achieve two goals when he met Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semi-finals of the Montreal Masters on Saturday. The 22-year-old Scotsman eyed to reach his first final in Canada and, in so doing, overtake Rafael Nadal as the world number two, becoming the highest-ranked British player since the official ATP Tour world rankings began in 1973.
And the Brit made it in style, beating the strong Frenchman in straight sets – 6-4, 7-6 – not a huge advantage, though it was just enough to make history.
Murray will take on Argentine sixth seed Juan Martin Del Potro in the final. The 20 year-old recovered from losing the first set to come back and overpower the 2003 Rogers Cup champion, Andy Roddick, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5 in a highly entertaining match.
This was Del Potro’s second win over Roddick in just a week, with the previous one coming in the Washington final.
