Russian tennis player Alisa Kleybanova has successfully completed a course of treatment for Hodgkin's lymphoma and now plans to return to action at the Miami tournament in March.
“I finished my treatments in December and a couple of weeks ago I did my last tests in Italy,” Kleybanova wrote in her blog on the WTA’s official website. “The treatments were successful, my doctors are happy with my health and I'm feeling great.”
The 22-year-old hasn’t played a single match since being diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer originating from white blood cells, in May last year.
“I have started to train and right now I'm in Florida playing tennis again,” she explained. “It was physically really hard in the beginning, but it was so emotional that I didn't want to get off the court. This is just amazing, I'm working out every day now and enjoying it so much more than before.”
Kleybanova has so far won two WTA Tour singles titles, with her best performances in Grand Slams being fourth round exits at Wimbledon and the Australian Open.
“More than anything, I've missed the competition,” the rising star wrote. “For me, tennis is not just going on the court and hitting the ball – it's testing yourself, seeing how good you are, trying new things, trying to improve, trying to win. For me the best part of tennis is the competition and I'm really looking forward to my comeback.”
The Miami Masters tournament is scheduled to take place on the hard courts of the local Tennis Center at Crandon Park from March 19 to April 1.
