Russia’s top female tennis player, Vera Zvonareva, says she doesn’t enjoy playing at Roland Garros, despite making it through to the second round of the tournament.
The No.3 seed stressed that her attitude has nothing to do with her poor results at the French Open as her previous failures could be explained by injuries or incorrect preparation.
”I love playing on clay; I grew up on it in Moscow. It’s just that Roland Garros isn’t as convenient for the players as the other three Grand Slam tournaments. It’s so cramped here. You have to break through crowds of people to get to the training courts and the restaurants for the players are always packed, so it’s hard to find a place to dine in a calm atmosphere. And you can’t take food with you as they won’t let you into the locker room with a plate. There are even no areas where you can lie for a normal massage,” Zvonareva told RIA-Novosti news agency.
The 26-year-old made light work of Lourdes Dominguez Lino from Spain, cruising to a 6-3 6-3 win.
Meanwhile, Zvonareva’s compatriot Nadya Petrova is out of the tournament after losing to a Russian with an Australian passport Anastasia Rodionova, 6-7 6-3 6-4.
And up and coming Vesna Dolonts capped off a great comeback victory against Anne Keothavong.
The Russian lost the opening set 6-3 and was down 2-0 in the second before storming back for an impressive victory, 3-6 7-6 6-4.
Reigning champion Francesca Schiavone will be the Russian's next opponent after getting her title defense off to a convincing start.
The 30-year-old absolutely outplayed Melanie Oudin in a 62-minute clay-court masterclass, 6-2 6-0.
In the men’s game, Russia's top player Mikhail Youzhny is through to the second round following a straight sets victory over Go Soeda of Japan, 7-5 6-2 6-4. Igor Andreev dispatched local favorite Florent Serra, also in straight sets, 6-4 6-1 6-3.
Another Russian Nikolay Davydenko, who's slipped to 30th in the world rankings, beat German Denis Gremelmayr, 7-6 6-1 6-3.
The in-form Novak Djokovic has extended his unbeaten run this year to 38 matches, defeating Thiemo De Bakker, 6-2 6-1 6-3.
Roger Federer is also into the second round, experiencing few problems against Feliciano Lopez of Spain, 6-3 6-4 7-6.
