Russia’s best male tennis player Nikolay Davydenko has become the first to reach round three of the Montreal Masters.
The world number eight won his second-round clash against France’s Paul Henry Mathieu in two sets, taking both in tie-breaks.
In the quarterfinals, Davydenko will play with world number three Andy Murray. Britain's best player knocked out Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 later on Tuesday.
Also progressing is top seed Roger Federer. The Swiss claimed his first victory as a father after his wife Mirka gave birth to twin girls last month.
Federer faced local wildcard Frederic Nimeyer. But despite the difference in class, Federer was made to sweat, as he took the first set only in a tie-break.
However, he was his usual dominant self in the second, converting a match point with his 12th ace as he wrapped up a 7-6, 6-4 win in less than 90 minutes.
