Maria Sharapova has once again missed on a Grand Slam title, failing to find keys to Victoria Azarenka of Belarus in the women’s final of the Australian Open.

Azarenka commited two double faults to allow Sharapova to break her in the very first game of the opening set.

But the Belarusian soon coped with her nerves. The 22-year-old leveled the score in the set at 3-3, and then stunned her opponent by grabbing nine games in a row.

Sharapova committed 30 unforced errors and three double faults in the match to go down 6-3, 6-0 in one hour and 20 minutes.

After the match Maria said it just wasn’t her day, adding that “Viktoria was too good on so many levels.”

The Belarus praised her team and everybody, who helped her achieve the historic win.

“Thanks for believing in me for so long. I can now start to believe in myself,”
she said.

Azarenka has become the first ever Belarusian citizen to wear a Grand Slam crown, and just the second player born in the 1990s to win one of the four major tournaments of the tennis season.

The Minsk native will also snatch the World No.1 spot in the new WTA Rankings to be released on Monday.
