Russia’s best tennis player Nikolay Davydenko is leaving Wimbledon after a third round loss to Tomas Berdych.
The Czech, who was always in control, needed just three sets to deal with his rival.
Davydenko had his only chance in the second set, but failed to win the break point in the eighth game. 6-2 6-3 6-2 was the final outcome.
Now, the only Russian man remaining at the All England Club is Igor Andreev. His match with Andreas Seppi was stopped in the fourth set yesterday due to darkness.
The Russian was just a few strokes away from victory and wasted no time on the court on Saturday, winning the set on tiebreak and taking the match 6-1 7-6 4-6 7-6.
He will meet Tommy Haas of Germany, who beat Marin Cilic in the fourth round.
In the women’s game, US star Venus William continued the defense of her Wimbledon win last year by taking the better of Carla Suarez Navarro.
The Spaniard couldn’t win a single game in the opening set. She looked better in the second, but it wasn’t enough to cause problems for Venus, who cruised to victory 6-0 6-4.
Another pleasant moment for the US champ is the unexpected win of qualifier Melanie Oudin against former World No. 1 Jelena Jankovic from Serbia.
The American lost the opener on tie break, but it didn’t shake her confidence as she cruised to victory taking the second set 7-5 and finishing the deal off in the third 6-2.
Ana Ivanovic and Caroline Wozniacki go further in the tournament after wins over Samantha Stosur and Anabel Medina Garrigues respectively.
