Russians like to live life in the fast lane, but now at least one of them is about to move up a gear and join the exclusive world of Formula One racing.
This year will see the first Russian driver, Vitaly Petrov, competing in the Formula One Grand Prix championship. Petrov will join Robert Kubitsa at Renault after getting the nod from the team's new boss Eric Boullier.
The 25-year-old has been steadily rising through the racing ranks over the past decade winning three domestic titles from 2002. He then moved up to the GP2, class finishing runner-up in that series last year.
His dream of competing on the elite circuit was realized after he received $20 million from Russian sponsors, including gas giant Gazprom.
“The GP2 series was a big challenge for me because I didn’t have the proper driving and career management experience. Once I cranked up a gear, people started taking notice,” Petrov told RT.
“I’m very happy because we’ve come a long way to get here and now we have the ultimate opportunity to show what we can do,” he added.
