Nico Rosberg has been named the first driver for the new Formula One team Mercedes.

The much-improved German is moving from Williams, the side he left earlier this month despite enjoying his best season in the motor sports top flight so far, where he finished 7th overall.

Mercedes are taking over from new champions Brawn GP and will race under its brand name for the first time since 1955. They are yet to announce who will take up the second seat.

Meanwhile, team chief Ross Brawn dismissed speculation that it would be Michael Schumacher, the retired seven-time champion. Brawn told the German Bild newspaper that Schumacher had no ambition to make a come back.
