(19.4Mb) embed videoYugra have posted their sixth consecutive KHL victory after beating Spartak Moscow in the Russian capital. The Siberian team only joined the elite league last year, but they are already causing quite a stir.
Hockey club Yugra was founded in the Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiysk in 2006 and spent the next four years clawing its way top the top.
In its rookie KHL year, the team, which was then severely lacking in star power, still managed to end the regular season in tenth place and qualify for the play-offs on their first attempt.
Though Yugra was knocked out of the conference quarter finals in 2010, their hunger for post season action is evidently as fierce as ever.
“We have a very close-knit squad which is vital for a team without any so-called star players and it was proved last year when we were rookies and made it into the KHL play-offs,” Sergey Shepelev, Yugra head coach, said. “Despite a slow start this season for various reasons, we are back on track and will be fighting for post season qualification again.”
In their latest match, Yugra managed to come from behind and defeat Spartak Moscow to record their sixth successive victory.
The Siberians now sit in the middle of the KHL standings and look in far better shape than their Wednesday opponents who posted their fourth loss in a row.
“Obviously, I’m very happy with the score,” Yugra’s Danny Groulx said. “We stuck to our game plan. We worked hard and were able to make a comeback at the end of the game. So it’s a victory point for us.”
Danny Groulx is Yugra's Canadian import who signed with the Siberians less than a couple of months ago.
Though his November debut was marred by injury, the defender was back into action in almost no time in order to continue helping his team get to the coveted play-offs.
“It’s a work in progress,” he said. “We’re definitely going the right way and, hopefully, we will keep going and we’ll get ready for the play-offs.”
Though Yugra's roster is by no means star-studded, even this regular season match against Spartak Moscow showed that this Siberian side is capable of reaching new heights on raw passion and character.
