Team Russia has thrashed Canada in the Ice Hockey World Championships quarterfinals to increase their winning streak at world champs to 26 consecutive victories.

Evgeny Malkin made a brace, while Pavel Datsyuk, Maksim Afinogenov and Sergey Fedorov each added a goal for the Russians, who ultimately beat Canada 5-2. Canada trailed 4-0 in the third period but good indivudual efforts by John Tavares and Matt Duchene sugared coat for Canada.

Russia outshot Canada, 30-27, with 13 Canada's shots made in the third period, when the game was already done for Ovechkin & Co.

Going into the game captain of the Russian team Ilya Kovalchuk stressed that win over Canada would be "a matter of principle" for the Russian players.

Russians have won the last two world tournaments, but disappointed at the recent Winter Olympics, where they were thrashed 3-7 by hosts Canada in the last eight.

"It is a matter of principle for me and my teammates to beat the Canadians and take revenge for the disappointing defeat in Vancouver…the score does't matter," Kovalchuk said in an interview with Echo Moskvy radio.

And on Wednesday Russians got even with the Canadiens.

It's the third straight year Russia ended Canada's gold-medal hopes at the tournament and this loss came a long way from the final. A young Canadian squad dropped four of its final five games and failed to get past the quarter-finals for the first time since 2002.

Russia will test hosts Germany in the last four on Saturday, while Sweden and the Czech Republic will decide the other finalist.

Congratulations to Russia, although I as a German am kinda scared for the semifinal right now. So far, the Game against Germany was imho the only one were Ovechkin and co actually had to work, however, I cant really see how Germany could do more than make it a hard fight, hmmm, gotta make some offerings to various luck gods, bribe the referees (damn why is Germany a not so corrupt country! In South Africa, Ref bribing will be much cheaper!) and spike the Russian teams Energy Drinks with various psycholdelic substances (I have the gut feeling that Alcohol wont work though ;D ). Cant we Krauts play the Czechs or the Swedes pretty please? Concerning North America, the absence of North Americans in the final 4 is quite amusing imho. Although having the USA demoted didnt happen (which would have made not only my day I guess).
