Reigning Olympic ice hockey champions Sweden have successfully kicked off the defense of their Olympic crown, though not to the same extent as Canadian and Russian quest for gold.
The Swedes beat Germany at the Hockey Canada Place with a score of just two goals to nil with both goals coming in the second period.
Mattias Ohlund scored a power-play goal and Loui Eriksson added an insurance marker later in the period.
In the other Group C game, Finland – who took the silver medal at the Turin Games – had no difficulty against Belarus. The Scandinavians dominated five goals to one.
Meanwhile, Russia's next group stage opponents Slovakia have lost to their biggest rivals from the Czech Republic.
The game finished 3-1 to the Czechs, where the eternal Jaromir Jagr played first fiddle. Aleksandr Ovechkin and company face Slovakia on Thursday night.

With the Winter Olympics not nearly being as popular as the Summer Olympics, not many people know "who to watch for" when each day comes up. I mean, I like to know before events start who is the favorite in the Men's League or Woman's Aerial Ski Jumping. It's tough. I mean, yeah you know the hockey players, and people like Shaun White due to the X-Games, and former medalists from past games... but who are the up and comers to watch for? Best of luck to all athletes. Regards
