The effort to help the families of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl plane crash victims will get a boost at the NHL game between the Washington Capitals and the Pittsburgh Penguins on October 13. The rivals are teaming up to raise funds to support the cause.
On Tuesday, the two clubs announced a joint effort to dedicate their NHL encounter to the KHL team that perished in a plane crash in September.
The players will wear jerseys with commemorative Lokomotiv patches, then afterwards autograph the special jerseys worn during the encounter before auctioning them on the NHL official website. All proceeds will benefit the Lokomotiv players' families.
The two Russian stars who were behind the effort, Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Malkin, will also take part in a symbolic face-off ceremony before the game.
"The tragic plane crash involving Lokomotiv Yaroslavl of the Kontinental Hockey League has affected the entire hockey community," Capitals vice president and general manager George McPhee told nhl.com. "We agreed that this was a great opportunity for both clubs to work together to raise money for all involved in this unfortunate loss."
