His first ever hat-trick in the US has allowed Sergey Kostitsyn of the Nashville Predators to become the NHL’s First Star of the Day.
The Belarusian forward scored in each of the periods in his team’s confident 5-3 win over the Calgary Flames.
The 24-year-old produced an absolutely amazing shooting on the night as all of his three efforts found the back of the net.
“It is nice to get a hat trick and get a win,’’ Kostitsyn is cited by Boston Globe as saying.
Predators coach, Barry Trotz, also said that he is glad his man has finally realized that he has to make more efforts on goal.
“If he keeps throwing the puck at the net, if it doesn’t go in for him it will go in for someone else,” he stressed. “I think he’s starting to get the message.”
Before the Calgary game Kostytsyn had only 37 shots in his last 33 games, with four efforts in one match being his season high.

Maybe it did him some good to get away from the Montreal, where all players are under a microscope. When he was with the Habs, he was making the headlines for all the wrong reasons; whether it was the mob-connected booze and hookers scandal that he was implicated in, or the hilarious feud he had going with his fellow Belarussian countryman Mikhael Grabovski, with the Leafs. If the past is any guide, most Belarussian hockey players in the NHL are drinking problems waiting to happen.
