Ice hockey legend Vyacheslav Fetisov is making his return to the ice, despite being 51 years old.
The press service of the KHL club CSKA Moscow has informed that the two-time Olympic champion has agreed to play for them in the league.
“We already sent all the required documents to the league and if all goes well, he will be able to play as soon as Friday in the match against SKA,” Natalia Myaskina, CSKA’s press secretary, told RIA-Novosti news agency.
The league has confirmed that they have received all the papers and that there are no obstacles for the star’s comeback.
CSKA and the player have signed a deal until the end of the 2009/10 season, he'll play under his usual No. 2.
Fetisov decided to unpack his skates after a proposition from the coach of his former club CSKA and partner in the Soviet team – Sergey Nemchinov, which came on Wednesday.
The Muscovites have recently slipped to fifth position in their conference, due to an epidemic of injuries.
Vyacheslav Fetisov last played an official game 11 years ago, back in 1998. After retiring he worked as the general manager of the Russian national hockey team, was Russia’s Minister of Sport and occupies the position of CSKA president.
He is one of the most decorated players in the history of hockey. Besides two Olympic golds, the defender won seven world championships with Russia and two Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings.
