Hundreds of previously unseen documents about Britain's deadliest sporting tragedy, dubbed the Hillsborough Disaster, are to be released by police, the UK Home Office says.
Ninety-six Liverpool supporters died in a crush at Sheffield Wednesday's Hillsborough stadium on April 15, 1989, before their team’s clash against Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup semis.
The 20th anniversary of the tragedy was marked with memorial services in all three cities last Wednesday.
Marking the date, Culture Secretary Andy Burnham promised to look at suspending the 30-year secrecy rules regarding official documents.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith met South Yorkshire's chief constable Meredydd Hughes to discuss the matter and her request has been accepted.
The victims’ families, who have been fighting for further inquiries into the deaths since 1989, welcomed the news.
