Barack Obama has once again supported efforts to bring the World Cup to the US in 2018 or 2022 during his meeting with the FIFA President Sepp Blatter.
The FIFA boss has invited the US president to the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, and Obama said he'd like to visit the event.
“I know that the people around him [Obama] they are all football fans, soccer fans. They want to make everything possible in the agenda [so] that the president can be at the opening or at the final of the World Cup in South Africa," Sepp Blatter said to AP news agency ahead of the meeting.
Barack Obama, who used to be a great basketball player in college, appears also to possess some good footballing skills. He bounced the ball on his foot, “making two, three movements, and then he took it to his head,” Blatter said.
Blatter presented Obama with a football from the Confederations Cup final, in which the US came close to sensationally beating Brazil, but eventually lost 3-2, despite having led 2-0.
Russia is also among the countries bidding for World Cup 2018.
The US has already hosted a World Cup, back in 1994. Brazil triumphed in the tournament, which became the highest-attended single sporting event in American history.
The average attendance for the Cup was 69.000, with the total attendance reaching 3.6 million.
