Andrey Arshavin’s partner at Arsenal, Emmanuel Adebayor, will play for Manchester City starting next season.

The Togolese striker has signed a five-year deal with Citizens, which is reported to be worth ₤25 million (around $41 million).

The 25-year-old will play under number 25 in his new team. And he says it’s not the big salary that made him swap London for Manchester.

“People who think that I have joined City for the money are wrong. If I had made a move for that reason then I would have been playing for Barcelona or Milan last season. They gave me bigger offers than Arsenal did for me to stay,” the African Player of 2008 said to the Manchester City official website.

“I want to show how I can help. Everyone at the club has shown me great respect and how they want to build something. I have a lot of ambition and want to be part of the City family. I know I have a lot to offer the team and I will work hard to make sure I help them,” he added.

Adebayor’s career in European football began in 2001, when he joined Metz in the French Ligue 1. Two seasons later he was signed by Monaco, and moved to Arsenal in 2006. The African played 104 games and scored 46 goals for the Gunners in different tournaments.

The Togo international became the third high-class striker Man City has bought this summer.

Argentine forward Carlos Tevez joined them from Manchester United at the beginning of the week. Manager Mark Hughes had already recruited Paraguay striker Roque Santa Cruz from Blackburn last month.

The Blues have spent almost $250 million on players in the last year alone.
