Swedish striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic has signed a five year deal with Spanish giants FC Barcelona, with the Catalonians paying €46 million (around $65.5 million) to his former club Inter Milan.
"I am the happiest man in this room right now… There are big clubs, but none quite this special," Ibrahimovich said during an official presentation at Camp Nou stadium, the club’s official website reports.
Ibrahimovich was the prime target for the UEFA Champions League 2008/09 winners after they decided to part ways with Cameroonian striker Saumel Eto’o. Now they are very happy with the purchase.
“He has quality skills. He is a player who fights, who takes his position and can hold on to the ball," Txiki Begiristain, Barca’s Director of football, said.
Before the presentation the 1.95-meter-tall Swede underwent a medical test, which revealed that he had a broken hand. Ibra received the injury playing an Inter friendly against Chelsea last week, but it was not enough to prevent the sides from signing the deal.
“We took a good look at his broken hand – it’s a break at the base of the second metacarpal on his left hand. We’ll have to try and fix it so he can get back to playing as soon as possible,” Ricard Pruna, FC Barcelona’s doctor, explained.
The son of Bosnian immigrants to Sweden, Ibrahimovic played 88 games and scored 54 goals for his previous club Inter Milan, which he joined in 2006. He’s won three Serie A titles in a row with the Nerazzurri during these years. The striker has also put in 20 goals for Sweden in his 56 caps.
Meanwhile, Inter have introduced their new signing on the same day. That is Saumel Eto’o – the man Ibrahimovic replaced at Barca. His transfer cost the Milan side some €20 million (around $28.5 million).
Another player traveling from Catalonia to Milan is attacking midfielder Aleksandr Hleb. He’ll play at Inter on a one-year loan, with the Italians having the option to buy his transfer for €10 million (around $14.2 million) after that.
No Love lost between CSKA and StuttgartBundesliga side Stuttgart has halted talks on the purchase of striker Vagner Love from CSKA Moscow as the clubs failed to agree on the sum of the transfer. |
