The Russian Football Union (RFU) has approached coach Guus Hiddink with a proposition to prolong his contract with the country’s national team.

The current deal expires after World Cup 2010, with Russia yet to book their tickets to South Africa, as they face Slovenia in the playoff round.

Russia’s Sports Minister and RFU president Vitaly Mutko told Interfax news agency that the organization is interested in Hiddink continuing his duties with the national team.

According to the official, the coach is considering the new proposal at the moment.

“I wouldn’t like to talk on the subject ahead of the World Cup 2010 qualifiers against Slovenia,” Mutko added.

Guus Hiddink has been the most successful coach of the national team since the collapse of the Soviet Union. The 62-year-old led Russia to the semis of Euro 2008, which they reached by beating Hiddink’s native Holland in an epic quarterfinal.

He signed a two and a half year contract worth $2.4 million a year with Russia in 2006. There is a clause in the deal that it can be prolonged for another two years.
