The German national squad, who are preparing for the crucial World Cup 2010 qualifier against Russia on Saturday, failed to score a single goal against the second squad of Bundesliga side Mainz 05.
The teams held two short matches (consisting of two 15-minute-long halves) in the city of Mainz, where the German training camp is now situated, Bild newspaper reports.
Both games took place on an artificial pitch similar to the one at Moscow’s Luzhniki stadium, where the October 10 clash will take place.
German boss Joachim Loew introduced quick and technical players – Mesut Özil from Werder Bremen, Piotr Trochowski from Hamburger SV and Lukas Podolski from Cologne in the first encounter, but they failed to upset the footballers, who play in the fourth division of German football.
It should be noted that the match took place in pouring rain and a lot of passes failed to reach their target on a slippery artificial pitch.
Germany made a number of substitutions for the second game. Team’s No. 1 René Adler from Bayer Leverkusen was replaced by Schalke 04 goalie Manuel Neuer. And a duo of Bayer Munich strikers – Mario Gomez and Miroslav Klose – came in to strengthen the attack, but with no result as both matches ended with a 0-0 scoreline.
The German team is planning to arrive in Moscow on Friday, October 9.
There are two games left to play in the World Cup qualifying round and Joachim Loew’s team are top of their Group, number 4, but Russia are just one point behind. The team who wins on Saturday is likely to get an automatic qualification for the tournament, while the loser will have to face one of the second-placed teams from another group in a play-off round.
Germany will entertain Finland at home, while Russia travel to Azerbaijan on the last match day.
