Legendary futsal player and senator of the Federation Council from the Voronezh region, Konstantin Eremenko, has died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 39 in Moscow.
Eremenko was playing futsal on Thursday, as he regularly did once a week “to keep in shape”, when he unexpectedly felt unwell. An ambulance arrived 17 minutes later and brought the footballer to Moscow’s Botkin Hospital, where he died.
Named the best futsal player in the twentieth century, Eremenko was the captain of the Russian national futsal team for many years.
“He was a intelligent man, a good specialist, who was distinguished in his work as a senator, he enjoyed authority among his colleagues and had friendly relations with them,” Eremenko’s colleague, senator Aslambek Aslakhanov, told Itar Tass news agency, adding that Eremenko was a perfect personality and the head of the family.
Eight-time Russian futsal champion with his club Dina, Konstantin Eremenko also won the UEFA Futsal Cup three times and added the FIFA Intercontinental Futsal Cup in 1997.
As part of the Russian squad, Eremenko grabbed the bronze medal at the Futsal World Cup in 1996 and won the European championship in 1999.
