Wednesday’s Russian Premier League game between Spartak Moscow and Zenit St. Petersburg was marked, apart from terrific performances by both sides, with a massive brawl after the game.
Shortly after the final whistle formalized Spartak 1-0 victory over Zenit, Spartak Moscow’s manager and Zenit star Igor Densiov clashed and had to be dragged apart. A number of other scuffles among players and training staff also broke out.
The fighting was picked up by Zenit fans, who started tearing chairs out and throwing them at police who were on the scene.
All in all, 136 fans were detained, a source in Moscow’s police said on Thursday.
The match was due to take place in August, but was postponed as the city was gripped by a toxic cloud of smog caused by nearby wildfires.
The game was attended by around 40,000 fans, including 6,000 from Russia’s northern capital.
