CSKA stumble out of the blocks in Champions League

Coach Juande Ramos needs a lot of work to make his CSKA lineup competitive on the European arena. The Army Men lost to Wolfsburg in their first Champions League clash on Tuesday.
The Muscovites found themselves in a very difficult situation after the first half in Germany, as they were 2-0 down.
The game looked equal for more than half an hour, but then Grafite came into focus. Zvjezdan Misimovic broke the CSKA defense with a great pass and the Brazilian striker knocked it under goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev to score Wolfsburg’s first ever UEFA Champions League goal.
The visitors were still reeling from the shock when they conceded another. Deividas Šemberas held Grafite‘s shirt in the box, leaving the referee no choice but to point to the spot. The Brazilian striker made the penalty his and his team’s second goal on the 41st minute, 2-0.
Wolfsburg concentrated on maintaining the winning score after the break and the German champs succeeded in doing so till the 76 minute mark, when Alan Dzagoev got one back for CSKA.
The Russians went looking for another goal, but were caught up in a counterattack instead. Grafite scored again to complete his hat-trick, sealing the victory 3-1.
Besiktas 0-1 Manchester United FC
In another Group B encounter, last year’s finalists Manchester United brought home all three points from a difficult trip to Turkey.
Veteran Paul Scholes put in a header 13 minutes from time for the only goal of the game.
Juventus 1-1 Bordeaux
One of the most unexpected results on Match Day 1 came from Turin as the underdogs from Bordeaux managed to equalize after Vincenzo Iaquinta’s goal for Juventus.
Jaroslav Plasil’s strike 15 minutes from time sealed a hard-earned point for the French champions in Italy.
Maccabi Haifa 0-3 Bayern Munich
Bayern Munich took the lead in Group A, as they scored three times away at Maccabi Haifa.
Daniel Van Buyten opened the deadlock in the second half and Thomas Müller added two more.
FC Zurich 2-5 Real Madrid

Seven goals were scored in Zurich – five of them coming from the Spanish Super club. The world’s most expensive footballer Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice from a long range free kick before and after the break.
The hosts had their moment of brilliance when they put in two goals in two minutes, closing the gap to 3-2, but Real quickly revered. Raul, Higuaín and Guti slammed one home each for the Galacticos on the night.
Marseille 1-2 AC Milan
The teams last met in the first UEFA Champions League finals in 1993. Marseille were victorious back then, but this time it was Milan who took the win.
Experienced Filippo Inzaghi put away two goals for the Italians, while the hosts could only reply with just one through Gabriel Heinze.
Atletico Madrid 0-0 APOLE
APOLE delivered a shocking draw for Atletico Madrid. No goals were scored at Vicente Calderón arena in the Spanish capital, with the guests from Cyprus creating as many chances as the home side.
Chelsea 1-0 Porto
The only Group D goal was scored in London. Nicolas Anelka was first on the rebound after his own shot early in the second half to give Chelsea a 1-0 win.

Spartak out of title race?In the Russian Premier League, Spartak Moscow have failed to close the gap on leaders Rubin after a 2-1 defeat away to Saturn. The Muscovites are now six points down to Rubin with the latter having a game in hand. |
