Moscow’s biggest Luzhniki arena have lost over 1,800 seats during CSKA’s Champions League match against Spanish football giants Real Madrid on Tuesday.
Nearly 75,000 supporters packed the stadium despite low temperatures to witness the big game, with not all of them able to cope with their emotions.
Over 3,000 police officers provided security at the Luzhniki stadium. Before the match, they identified and arrested more than 30 people who were drunk or tried to smuggle prohibited items into the stadium. Another 40 fans were detained for various offenses during and after the game.
The match ended with 1-1 scoreline. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo gave his team the lead in the first half, but CSKA rookie Pontus Wernbloom replied with a stoppage time equalizer.
It is not the first time Russian football fans have misbehaved during this European season.
In November last year, Zenit St. Petersburg supporters disrupted play by setting off smoke bombs during their team’s home match against Cypriot side APOEL, putting their team under threat of disqualification from the Champions League.
