It’s been a sorry night for Russian clubs in the UEFA Cup. Holders Zenit and former winners CSKA have both been knocked out at the last 16 stage.
Zenit won 1-0 on the night in St Petersburg. Anatoly Tymoshuk gave the Russians some hope with a goal just before half-time. But they couldn’t get the vital second. And it’s Udinese who go through 2-1 on aggregate after their victory in the first leg.
Also going no further are 2005 winners CSKA Moscow. They lost 2-0 in Ukraine to Shakhtar Donetsk on Thursday night, going out 2-1 on aggregate.
Fernandinho scored from the spot in the middle of the second, while Luiz Adriano got the other.
