The captain of the Italian national football team Fabio Cannavaro has failed a doping test, Football Italia reports.

Seria A side Juventus, for whom the 36-year-old currently plays, claim the positive probe came as a result of a cortisone injection used to treat Cannavaro after a bee sting.

The doctors knew that the medicine contained ingredients forbidden in sport, but didn’t inform the relevant authorities.

The Italian Olympic Committee's anti-doping prosecutor Ettore Torri has launched an investigation into the case.

Cannavaro has been suspended from Italy's World Cup qualifier against Ireland on Saturday, but he is expected to join the team for Wednesday's clash against Cyprus.

Fabio Cannavaro is regarded as one of the best defensive players of the last decade in Italian football. He has 129 caps for his country, for which he scored twice.

The Naples born player became the Italian captain after World Cup 2002, replacing the legendary Paolo Maldini.
