The Russian leg of the Beach Soccer Euroleague gets underway in Moscow on Friday. The hosts take on Romania in their opener.
While Russia's national football players will be twiddling their thumbs this summer due to their failure to qualify for the World Cup in South Africa, their beach soccer counterparts are getting ready for the biggest ever tournament to be held in Russia.
Moscow hosts the last leg of the Euroleague, where the Russians are the defending champions.
The world of a beach soccer player is a far cry from that of a professional footballer. They do not have the same multi-million dollar salaries or advertisement deals. Many of Russia's players have to find other jobs, such as taxi drivers, to supplement their income.
In addition, the techniques needed to play beach soccer differ greatly from that needed to play football. Due to the sand being uneven, dribbling goes out of the window, and the emphasis is on keeping the ball off the ground as much as possible.
Russia will be looking for a good tournament, especially with the World Championships taking place next year.
