Billionaire Roman Abramovich may become the head of the new organization aimed at helping the development of Russian football – the Board of Trustees of the Russian Football Union.

A group of prominent businessmen, including Gazprom CEO Alexey Miller, president of Russian Railways Vladimir Yakunin, vice-president of Spartak Moscow’s main sponsor, Lukoil, Leonid Fedun and CSKA owner Evgeny Giner are also set to join the new body, Vedomosti newspaper reports, citing a source in the Presidential Administration.

“The idea of creating the board of trustees of the Russian Football Union is in the works now and the candidacy of Roman Abramovich as its head is being considered. I personally support the candidacy of Abramovich. It's time to start paying the bills and support not only his beloved Chelsea, but the domestic football as well,” Sergey Stepashin, Chairman of Russia’s Accounting Chamber, told Interfax news agency.

One of the main aims of the Board of Trustees is reported to be the control over the efficiency of spending of fund allocated for the development of football.

A new body might be implemented only after an extraordinary conference of the RFU, which is to be held no earlier than May 2010.

Vedomosti claim that Boards of Trustees may be created in other sports federations as well. The recommendation on establishing them may be given on March 26 in Sochi during a Sports Council on the results of 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
