Despite having other opponents on the cards, WBA heavyweight champion, Aleksandr Povetkin, has once again told RT that a bout against Wladimir Klitschko remains his primary goal.

He's known as the Russian Knight, some call him the White Lion, but whatever his nickname, Aleksandr Povetkin is Russia's main contender in boxing's most prestigious heavyweight division.

A rising star in 2004, when he won Olympic gold, he soon gained a solid reputation as a pro, punching out one win after another.

Povetkin has steered a steady course with a single destination – a title bout against the King of the Hill, Wladimir Klitschko.

The Ukrainian currently holds five major belts, with his elder brother Vitaly adding the WBC crown to their family collection.

Nevertheless, one of the most anticipated bouts of recent years is yet to happen, having been called off several times because of injuries or contractual disputes.

“Sometimes the Klitschko brothers claim I don't want this fight,” Aleksandr Povetkin told RT. “Meanwhile, some people tell me that the Klitschkos don't want this fight. It doesn't make any sense. Let it just be fair and square, it was only serious injuries that stopped me from fighting Wladimir, and all those who are close to me know that’s true. I hope we will face each other in the ring sooner or later and settle our scores in the best way we can – by boxing.”

However, the question of “when” is still a pressing one. After defending his WBA title earlier this month, Povetkin is next set to face Marco Huck.

He's the reigning WBO cruiserweight champion, who a year ago defeated Povetkin's teammate Denis Lebedev after a very controversial split decision.

“I would love to see Denis Lebedev face Marco Huck once again,”
the 32-year-old said. “But it looks like it's my turn to fight him. Well, I'm ready. I have never picked out opponents. I will fight anyone I have to.”

“Marco Huck expressed his desire to fight Aleksandr Povetkin,” Vladimir Khryunov, Povetkin’s manager, added. “We always pay attention to these kinds of offers. If a man wants to fight, let him get the fight. And we said "yes". Aleksandr is also obliged to defend his title against the WBA number one contender, Hasim Rahman.”

So the epic battle between the Povetkin, the Russian Knight, and Wladimir Klitschko, Doctor Steelhammer, still keeps boxing fans waiting, making them even more curious about the outcome.

“It's hard to make any predictions for this fight,”
Povetkin stressed. “We will see what happens. Of course, I will train hard to avoid his jab. It's no secret I will need to break the defence and get inside. But it's just words for now. Let's wait for the fight and see the talk made real.”

Not many would argue Aleksandr Povetkin is still one of the most dangerous threats to Klitschko's reign, so the fight needs to take place for the good of the sport of boxing itself.
