The IBF heavyweight championship bout between title holder Wladimir Klitschko and mandatory challenger Aleksandr Povetkin of Russia will take place on September 11 in the German city of Frankfurt am Main.
“The fight between Klitschko and Povetkin will be held on September 11 in Frankfurt at the Eintracht football club arena. We were informed of it by the Klitschko brothers’ company – K2. For me the choice of this date seems, to put it mildly, strange, because we all know what happened on that day nine years ago,” Vladimir Hryunov, Povetkin’s manager, said.
Previously, it was announced the Ukrainian and Russian boxers would enter the ring a week later on September 18.
Hryunov also said that his client’s preparations for the biggest bout of his career are going to plan.
“The preliminary stage is completed. He began sparring [on Monday]. We are currently selecting his sparring partners. Coach Teddy Atlas is very serious about this issue. All the training is divided into two phases. The first one will take place in the US, while the second – in Europe,” he explained.
As IBF mandatory challenger, Aleksandr Povetkin was to appear in the ring against Wladimir Klitschko on December 2008, but back then the fight was cancelled due to the Russian boxer injuring himself prior to the match.
The 30-year-old Russian remains undefeated in his 19 professional bouts and says he has what it takes to bring the champion down.
IBF and WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko last appeared in the ring on March 20. The 34-year-old boxer knocked out US rival Eddie Chambers in a bout held in Düsseldorf, Germany.
