Ukrainian heavyweight Vitaly Klitschko has defended his WBC title after taking the better of Shannon Briggs of the US on points in Hamburg, Germany on Saturday night.

The champ started in his usual calm manner, knowing that the only chance of victory for the former WBO title holder – Briggs – was to fire his cannon in the beginning of the bout.

The 39-year-old Ukrainian increased pressure on his opponent with every round and the American was only saved by the bell in the 7th round.

Briggs looked very tired, but showed real character, managing to say in the ring till the end of the final round.

The referees' decision was unanimous as all three of them gave the victory to Klitschko.

It was the 41st professional win for the Ukrainian, who apologized for failing to knock his rival out before the German public.
