The criminal case against former WBA heavyweight champion Nikolay Valuev, who was accused of beating up a security guard at a sports center in St. Petersburg, has been dissolved.
The decision was taken due to the lack of component elements of a crime in Valuev’s actions, ITAR-TASS news agency reports.
The conflict between Valuev and the man, whose name is Yury Sergeyev, took place in January 2006 in a parking lot of Spartak sports center.
According to the Russian media reports, the 2.13-meter-tall boxer attacked the man, who was 61 years old back then, because he was rude to the boxer’s wife, demanding she park her car in the right place.
Valuev knocked Sergeyev off his feet with a punch to the chest, and then repeatedly beat him in the head.
The guard was taken to hospital, where he was diagnosed with an internal head injury, concussion and contusions on the chest.
Following the incident, Sergeyev filed a lawsuit against the athlete in court, demanding the Russian giant pay one million rubles (around $33,000) in compensation.

In January 2008, the court found Valuev guilty of causing minor damage to Sergeev’s health and ordered the boxer to pay a 30,000 ruble (around $1,000) fine, as well as 100,000 rubles (around $3,300 ) in compensation to the victim. Lawyers for both Valuev and Sergeev appealed against the decision.
In November 2008, the court upheld the original decision, but released the athlete from a fine of 30,000 rubles due to the expiry of the period of limitation. But again neither party was satisfied.
In January 2010, a new criminal case was launched against Valuev, because Sergeyev found old rib fractures and believed he had received them during the conflict with the boxer.
The guard demanded Valuev be found guilty of wounding of moderate severity, and judged according to another, stricter, article of law.
However, as the online edition of Fontanka.ru reported, the medical examination could not establish a link between Sergeev’s broken ribs and his conflict with Valuev, which occurred in 2006. So the second criminal case against the pugilist has been closed.
In an interview with RIA Novosti, Valuev’s lawyer, Sergey Solomonov, said that his client has the right to claim compensation for damage caused to him during the investigation, but will not do so.
Valuev surely has other things on his mind at the moment as he prepares for his bout against Cuban fighter Odlanier Solís, with the winner becoming mandatory challenger for the IBF heavyweight title, currently held by Vitaly Klitschko.
