US boxer Chris Arreola says he’s “dropping tons of weight” ahead of a September 26 bout with WBC heavyweight champion Vitaly Klitschko.
“Training for this fight has been different, with the help of Darryl Hudson, my strength and conditioning coach. We had to step up a level and just found ourselves in a spot where we had to train harder. I’m just fortunate to have this title shot, and I’ve been working my (expletive deleted) off and will continue to do whatever I have to do to win that title,” Chris Arreola said during a telephone press-conference, Boxinsider.com reports.
Undefeated Arreola, nicknamed “The Nightmare”, is number one in the WBC rankings and boasts a perfect 27-0 record with 24 knockouts.
The US boxer confessed “it bugs him” when people are questioning his physical conditioning, and says that his weight problems are in the past.
”They need to come to the gym and check me out and watch me for themselves. They’ll see what I’m doing and how hard I’m actually working. I just checked this morning and I’m already [2 hundred and]59 [pounds], so I’m already good right there. But it does bug me,” he said.
“The main thing for me has been the two-a-days. And I cut out beer. I’ve just been eating right, a lot of vegetables and greens, chicken and fish and meats. And just the right amount for me. I have a ton of energy and feel great,” he added.
The American boxer also shed the light on some of his tactics.
“I’m going to try and not get hit but I know that’s impossible. How confident am I that I can take a punch? I’m pretty confident that I can take a punch. But that’s not the plan. The plan is not to get punched but to do the punching, and to not get caught in his territory. My plan is to not stand outside and take those bombs from him,” he said.
Arreola is not sure that he’ll be able to knock his opponent down, saying the main thing for him is to “be prepared to go a full twelve rounds.”
But he can surely count on the crowd support on fight night, as Los Angeles is to be the venue for the bout.
”We have a lot of Mexican and Latino boxing fans out here and I’m hoping to have a big crowd like Antonio Margarito had against Shane Mosley,” he said.
And if Arreola defeats Vitaly “Doctor Iron Fist” Klitschko, who has an impressive 39-2 record with 37 knockouts, he’ll make history by becoming the first heavyweight champion of Mexican descent.
“It’s more motivating to me. There’s no pressure. I’m up there with Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson is dead and they’re still making documentaries about him. I can’t wait till they start making my documentary,” he said.
