The fight for the Euroleague’s quarter-final places has entered its final stage. With Russian basketball powerhouse CSKA already in the play-offs, the other Russian side, UNICS, have aggravated their situation.
On Thursday night the Kazan team missed their chance to book an early berth after losing to Fenerbahce. They lost 94-87 to the Turkish Champions, but only after forcing the game into overtime.
UNICS's Lynn Greer, this week’s MVP in Euroleague, led the scoring with an impressive 33 points, but it was not enough against a Fenerbahce side who were fighting to stay in the competition.
In order to claim top spot in Group G, UNICS now have to beat reigning champions Panathinaikos on home soil on February 29.In case they lose in Kazan, they will have to rely on Olimpia beating Fenerbahce.
Meanwhile, Panathinaikos have already reached play-offs, despite losing to Olimpia Milano on Thursday.
