Brand, expand and franchise – the Islamic State has borrowed this business model to successfully globalize its operations. And as the US draws down its forces in Afghanistan, it leaves behind a security void in the Central Asian region that IS has rushed to fill. Can international powers overcome their differences to tackle the nascent threat, or will the Islamists take advantage of them to establish a foothold?
