""In fact there is nothing new in the news that innocent civilians are being killed in Afghanistan by the American military,"" This is a true statement for lots of people in the world but people in the USA do not have that thought in their mind. This is black and white in their face documentation. So these papers are an eye opener for many Americans that live in their nested cocoon of Western press... Kyle

I disagree with Kyle in that I believe that the vast majority of people in the USA are aware that innocent civilians are being killed in Afghanistan (and Iraq for that matter). Many people in the USA only choose to read/listen/watch press that they know will only present the viewpoint that they already agree with - in this case, sources that studiously avoid any criticism of the war(s). Even those that only expose themselves to this biased news that presents the war only in a positive light know that innocents die, but they can justify this in terms of a "greater good", or "preventing extremism in the USA itself", or some other naive justification. Accurate and informative news is easily available, but it does challenge some deeply held misconceptions that are truly cherished in some segments of our society. For example, large percentages of the population choose to believe (a) that the earth is less than 10,000 years old, (b) that the theory of evolution is unsound, (c) that global warming is a hoax, etc. We in the States are fighting (and frequently losing the fight) against religious extremeism and distructive entrenched powerful interests just as the Russians, Turks, etc are.
