A report commissioned by President Barack Obama reveals a lack of cash to meet NASA's goals for the US Space program. But it’s not just about more money, says Berin Szoka from the Space Frontier Foundation.

What this piece failed to mention is that the planned replacement to the US Shuttle - Constellation (Ares 1 and Ares 5 launch vehicles and the Orion crew vehicle) - is years behind schedule. It had been thought that there might be a year or 2 year gap in the US ability to put men into space (meaning that they'd have to buy seats on Soyuz flights), but the report says that it is closer to a 7 year gap. This would be totally unacceptable to the US. So Ares 1 may never carry a human, but keep your eyes open to SpaceX and their Falcon and Dragon vehicles.
