Hundreds of Ukrainians have gathered outside the parliament in protest over a decision to allow Russia to keep a naval base in the country.
The rally was led by former Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko, who called on her supporters to block the deal.
It was signed on Wednesday by the Presidents of both countries.
The deal extends Russia's lease of the base for its Black Sea Fleet in the city of Sevastopol for a further 25 years, after the current agreement expires in 2017.
The two leaders also agreed to a 30 per cent discount on Russian gas supplies to Ukraine.
Moscow and Kiev are likely to ratify the deal next week.

Russia and Ukraine sign historic deals, resetting relationsAfter years of stormy relations, Russia and Ukraine have finally set sail towards calmer waters. |
Well, this is amusing. Russia today states there were "hundreds of protesters", whereas Western and Ukrainian media, specifically the Ukrainian National News Agency, state there were thousands (5,000 according to UNION, 10,000 according to the opposition party, "several thousand" according to some western sources). Of course, nobody knows the exact figure, but clearly there is bias involved in the estimates made by some of the different sources. At any rate, it is clearly in the economic interests of Ukraine to foster good relations with Russia and make deals like this. However, a substantial faction in Ukraine, one which was repudiated in the last election, seems to have a crazed and enduring resentment towards Russia over various crimes committed by Moscow purposely and accidentally/incidentally during the Soviet era and even by Russia before then. My gut is that Ukraine should have good relations with Russia but should be careful to distinguish itself as its peer and partner, and perhaps even ally, but not its servant. At the end of the day however, it is up to Ukraine to decide it own orientation, and that is the most sacred principle in action here.
The deal is a huge plus(big, big money)for Ukraine and also is a good thing for Russia..Who ever is against this deal in Ukraine is 100% wrong...This money will be a beggining of recovery for Ukraine economy-there will be more to come from Russia wich is always ready to help their blood brothers! To everyone in the World is clear as it can be that this deal is WIN-WIN for both...I can not undestand those politicans who put their own intrest(personal) before intrest of their nations.New goverment in Ukraine act in honest way and do take care of intrest of Ukraine people unlike one before them(Yuschenko) who was traitor and done everithing possible to make truble between Russia and Ukraine-two brother nations by all means! Ukraine place is next to Russia....A Black Sea Fleet is also Ukrainian fleet to!Thanke you

If you goes around Russia along the Ukraine boarder, you'll found many villages that speak Ukraine language. Ukraine and Russia are blood brothers and actually one single country. We hope with the agreement that benefit both counties, will lead to further integration. Look at Europe, they have to form union because economy and political strength can be enhanced in unity.
