Blind Russian pop singer Diana Gurtskaya is waiting for an official apology from the U.K. embassy in Moscow after she was asked to take off her dark glasses for a visa photograph.
Well said, carla. I know our regulations are though, and somewhat invasive, but they do apply to everyone, and in equal measure. So, no matter how distasteful the experience, there was definitely no discrimination in this case.

I see nothing wrong with the request by the British Embassy. There certainly could be someone who very much resembles the singer , especially with sunglasses on and with fake papers hoping to be taken for the singer. If the glasses are off, there is the likelihood that the disability could probably not be duplicated or even resemble the singer. As for the retina scan, well there may be a very specific type of damage done to the not only the retina or lac thereof but the eyes themselves that would definitely be identifiable as the singers. This may also protect the singer in the long run also in here visits abroad should someone try and imitate her. I'm sure the British Embassy personnel were very polite as only they can be and she should adhere to the very real dangers that not only Britain faces but any country. I personally think she should either apologize for being rude, since she is the one asking to go to the UK and just as anyone from the UK has to abide by Russia's policies. If Madonna abides by Russia visa requirements for her show in August this singer should learn from Madonna and she is obviously not known around the world like Madonna. I hope she isn't looking for a lawsuit. I had a brother whose retina's were burnt at birth and I do not believe she can skate on the disability in this regard.
