One of the first Soviet cosmonauts to ever go into space, Pavel Popovich, died on Wednesday. His death comes on the same day as the successful launch of a Soyuz spacecraft up to the ISS.

A very sad day, our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and colleagues. As an engineer that worked in the US Space Program years ago, the contributions of pioneering cosmonauts will never be forgotten. The legacy of this great man and others that followed in his footsteps will live forever, they did the impossible with great skill, grace, and purpose in the most hostile of environments risking it all.
