After serious talks in Beijing, Dmitry Medvedev has wrapped up his presidential visit to China. Russia’s President has visited the world's biggest technology fair at Shanghai’s Expo 2010.

Dmitry Medvedev opened the Day of Russia at Shanghai Expo 2010 by giving a speech. Afterwards he had a bilateral meeting with Xi Jinping, the deputy chair of Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is thought to be the most likely candidate to take over in 2010.

As a result, Medvedev’s meeting can be seen as laying the ground for future relations with China’s next head of state.

“Although Xi Jinping is the most likely future leader of China, it is unlikely they discussed with Medvedev concrete plans for the future. But they probably talked about mutual approaches to Russia-China relations and global issues,”  thinks Andrey Karneev, Deputy Director of the Institute of Asian and African Studies.

The two leaders spent most of the day together; they toured the Russian and Chinese pavilions, two of the favorites of this year’s expo.

Interest to Russia is so high at the event that the pavilion has the longest queues out of all others. People were waiting for about an hour and twenty minutes in yesterday’s line, for example.

The president praised the success of the Russian pavilion, whose head designer Boris Krasnov shared with RT the key to its success.

“[We used two aspects of Russia’ image abroad:] literature and theater, and this mix plus innovation plus some interesting ideas [of performance] made it successful because [it’s just ordinary] people who came to such a huge event as Expo 2010. It’s not a special exhibition, technical exhibition – it’s an exhibition for people.”

“It’s a message for people, for the future and a big competition, a spectacle,” the artist said. “It’s a big opening, big surprise.”

Russia’s top tech energy companies, including RosAtom and RosNano, are showing the best of what they have to offer. RosNano itself is a nanotechnology corporation, which is part of a bigger project called Skolkovo – Russia’s so-called version of “Silicon Valley”.

This is part of a much bigger picture of the president’s plans to rapidly push forward Russian modernization.

“This exhibition is a unique chance to speed up the modernization of our economies and institutes,” Dmitry Medvedev said at the expo. “Innovative development is certainly the choice of our country. We are following this path and will do everything for our economy to modernize, change and adapt to modern life.”

“The main message of Russia’s exposition in Shanghai is that we are establishing a friendly relationship with China for decades to come,” said Stanislav Naumov, Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade.

Sergey Novikov, spokesperson for RosAtom, told RT about Russian-Chinese cooperation in this area.

“We have created during several years the whole technological chain in China. We have constructed a gas centrifuge enrichment plant,” Novikov said. “We also have constructed two units of Tianwan nuclear power plant, which is the most secure nuclear power plant in China according to experts’ opinion and has the greatest capacity.”

“This year we have launched first Chinese experimental fast neutron reactor, which was constructed in Nizhny Novgorod,” the RosAtom spokesperson added. “It’s a special honor for us to receive President Medvedev today, because it’s not just the Russian day at Chinese Expo, as well it is the 65th anniversary of Russia’s nuclear industry today.”
