The unmanned aerial vehicles produced by Russian companies are too poor in quality to be accepted by the Russian Air Force.

“Unfortunately, we have not received any UAVs with the specifications we need,” told journalists on Thursday Colonel General Aleksandr Zelin, head of the Air Force.

The models suggested by developers are not satisfactory in terms of speeds, altitude capacities, or the resolution of their imaging equipment, the senior officer said.

“Accepting drones like those would be a crime,” he concluded.

The criticism follows the Defense Ministry’s decision to purchase a number of UAVs from Israel. Officials said the drones and principles of their use will be studied by Russian specialists.

Commenting on the deal, Gen. Zelin said that the Israeli drones are superior to Russian designs, but lack latest “know-how or state-of-the-art technology.”

Some Russian UAVs are used by the armed forces, security agencies and some companies for reconnaissance. For instance, the ZALA 421-04М drone is doing patrol missions at the Baikonur cosmodrome rented by Russia from Kazakhstan.

However, the first Russian strike drone “Dozor-600” was only revealed at the MAKS 2009 air show and is still not approved by the military.

Russian producers are lagging behind leading competitors in the US, United Kingdom and Israel, military officials admitted. In February this year, the Defense Ministry announced an investment program to stimulate UAV industry development.

It's Russian fault during Soviet era, Soviet leader/planner are to busy to countering every American new war toy. American it self begin searching UAV as combat platform during Pacific war, they using it to bomb Japanese ship. I believe if Soviet leader begin research and invest in UAV, Soviet scientist are more capable than Russian today, and they gonna catch-up even surpass US or Israel today UAV program. Although not truly UAV, Hitler's rocket scientist already create basic principal for UAV and cruise missile from V2 flying rocket project.
