If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then Russia should be very flattered indeed. That’s because China’s new aircraft carrier bears a striking resemblance to an old Russian model.

Chinese J-11B

Despite holding the position as one of the world’s biggest economies, China seems unwilling to shed its reputation for producing cheap replicas.

Chinese arms manufacturers should realize this is not the 80''s anymore and they are ripping off a friend because they dont want to pay full price for parts. Or maybe they really just want an inferior copy to counter it's lack of numbers in modern airpower. Either way it's still a loss.

Offhand, I don't think anybody copyrights key nuclear weapons technology: if you copyright something, you have to publish details of the invention so you can document any suit against infringement. The other option is to keep it as a trade secret. In this case, anybody is free to copy it but on the other hand, he can be prosecuted for theft. Or, in this case, espionage.

the J11 has been produced for many years and not is not for export - not sure why this is news now. i guess if they reshape the plane and since they already do not to copy the inside parts, then it wouldn't be copy. but how much shape can you change? many long range fighters in the west also have two engines, wings , two vertical tails, nose even before USSR.

Ahh, China stealing more IP rights, who would have guessed. Seems the USA and Russia have yet another point of mutual interest. P.S. Arthur, I don't believe you have to publish details of your copyrights, you may be thinking of patents (which generally require public disclosure of how to make your invention in exchange for exclusive rights for a period of time).

Russia should not get to mad. Look at the new Russian T50 (5th Gen Fighter Jet). Kinda reminds you of a US F-22 or F-35? China did what Russia did. Took our (USA) design, and using local electronics, or at least trying to.

Ha, Ha, Ha, China learned well from Russia, Russians are experts on copying anything they can use. Well done, I only hope the planes are not made out of cardboard like the faked Russian planes and tanks on military basis.

I would hate to be in a shoes of the pilots which will fly the replicas. The quality of the chinese products is unfortunately well known so for any buyer this is just a waste of money.

1) The J-11B is garbage. It's presumed to have an AESA radar, but I seriously doubt it, the Chinese can hardly make their own passive electronically scanning arrays without Russia holding their hand throughout the whole process. Look at the JF-17, Russia had to basically make the radar for China, same with the N001 on the J-10A. 2) 'Living off it's Soviet legacy,' what does this guy know? What about the PAK FA, it was totally designed in Russia starting in the mid 90's. Russia made it's own AESA (X and L bands), it's own RAM, 3D thrust vectoring (1996 after the fall of the Soviet Union) etc. Sukhoi and Mikoyan have done amazingly in research and have put us ahead of Europe after a 15 year hiatus and at the level of the US again. The fact that the J-15 and J-11B have come out now, proves that China is unable to produce it's J-XX 'fifth generation fight,' as it still resorts to stealing it's tech from other countries. The only mistake Russia made was selling anything to China.

Within the past 80 years have the Chinese really came up with anything on their own outside of bazillions of troops able to march in perfect unison?

trust the chinese to copy some one else's work .They can't do anything on their own any more. After creating gunpowder the society say back and let the rest of the world innovate

This is all that China does. It undercuts every other country on prices, forcing its people to work as slaves, and all of the other countries eventually find their own businesses are dying. China has become self-dependent, while getting all other countries to be dependent on it. Clever. We should act now or else China will be telling us all what to do.

Why sell high-tech to China when you know full well that it is going to be copied? And exported at half the price? Or given free like they are doing to the Pakistani Air Force??

Americans always as clueless as its gets. They think everything was copied from them ! No, actualy 80% of so called american tech is imports and refine/moded foreign ideas. F-14, 15, 16, 18, 22, 35 all based on Russia airframes, some of the them from 1940s. Get a clue. LOL

well i feel regret and shame about it: because i was Chinese, but I'm not born nor Chinese mainland citizen.
Today Chinese engineer really know to build something, but they lack know-how to study and design something from begin, which is very important so the result will 100% locally breed.
China today is in difficult time to really innovate something, their leader and planner only want something ready that cut cost and time, and they only concentrate to economic booming. Indeed China need something modern, that reliable in facing any kind of threat and challenge that China will facing, Chinese leader has decide to rely only to their own product so when they want buy something from Russia that's become their point, their specification.
They cannot depend on the West because western double political agenda, and the Russian last I heard won't allowed Sukhoi became platform for Chinese weapon, and in Chinese side they desperately needs fighter like Sukhoi as their answer for their needs for superiority fighter (this kind of fighter is backbone of some country Air Force). They didn't get it they want so they create their own copies, cut cost, cut time, shameful indeed but some problem need breakthrough.

That's technology transfer/industrial espionage for you all to see. Of course, Russia may not be please with this news. But Russians too used foreign technology to develop their military aircraft. And in this situation, the two-faced lying hypocrite of D.C. don't have any right to criticize others. In fact, Israel and Japan too has done that in the past.
