As part of President Medvedev’s pledge to modernize the Russian economy, leading Russian think tanks recently traveled to Japan to take part in a forum on innovation.

The modernisation of the Russian economy has become a key policy pledge of President Dmitry Medvedev after he expressed his determination to move the country away from its dependency on natural resources and to promote new industries.

The main purpose of the trip was to present the Global Policy Forum, which is to take place in early September in the Russian city of Yaroslavl, explained Yan Vaslavsky, a member of the delegation.

The main idea is to present the state as an instrument for technological modernization,” Vaslavsky said. “This is the biggest section of the Yaroslavl forum. And the chief idea was to explore the Japanese experience of modernization.”

Simply great to talk to Japan. What they have done in R&D is simply fantastic. It's incredible now to see the dependency of the US aircraft industry on the Japanese R&D programs and products. I really like the breadth of approach and contacts being undertaken by Russia, our economy is evolving, it isn't a start,do, finish timeline. So the more we look around the world, the more contacts we make the better. The world is a huge place, we need to look at anything worth looking at, wherever it is. But we must also remeber, we need deploy these strategies into reality. Not just stay at the top level concepts. So the network needs strengthening internally as well as externally. This part also needs equal attention and focus so that actual PROACTIVE support is there for our companies, through awareness, leaving the final drive from the companies themselves to use this support or not.
