The Iranian Bushehr nuclear power plant under construction by Russian engineers will be launched in August, Prime Minister Putin has announced.
Putin was speaking in Istanbul, where he is meeting his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan and President Abdullah Gul.
Construction of the Bushehr plant began in 1975 by German Siemens and Telefunken and it was due to be online in the early 1980s. However, work was put on hold after the Islamic Revolution and subsequent payment problems.
Russia took over the half-constructed plant in 1995, but the project was postponed several times for various reasons. The construction was finished by spring 2009, and now the plant is undergoing a pre-launch test.
The scheduled launch will not be harmed by new sanctions against Iran, which the UN Security Council is soon to consider.
“We have worked a lot and we believe that the resolution [on sanctions] is almost agreed upon. Our point of view is that the measures must not be overwhelming and must not put Iranian people in a situation where its path to peaceful nuclear energy would be blocked,” Putin said.
The head of the Russian government added he may meet with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who is now in Turkey as well.
