The famous AK-47 rifle has remained unsurpassed in its durability and reliability for almost 70 years. Its creator Mikhail Kalashnikov marks his 90th birthday on Tuesday.
I dont wish to denigrate the invention of the AK47 - the best infantry weapon ever made, & still is - but we should bear in mind that it owes much to the German STG 44; as do all other assault rifles.
Whatever...I too, am an engineer, and find his effort outstanding!
I to am a weapon designer. I had the pleasure of meeting Kalashnikov in Amman Jordan and getting his approval of a handgun I designed for Jordan. He took off his tie clip which was a minature AK-47 and presenting it to me. Although I didn't speak Russian and he couldn't speak English, we spoke a common language. Mikhail is a Statesman and a Gentleman. His philosophy on life is what is needed by all countries more than his rifle. Knowing the man, he would agree with me.
I am a combat vet of Viet Nam and I can certainly say that the AK- 47 was a better weapon all the way around compared to the old M-16 we used .Just enough heavy parts in the action to keep it 'running' ! This is a weapon that a 9 year old or a 90 year old can take apart and put back together, very durable, and has a dependability that has no comparison. The 7.62x39 an actual .30 cal. has plenty of power . The figure of the AK-47 is on 2 national flags and the gun itself is the most recognized in the world..... Happy birthday Mr. Kalashnikov.

A great man, a hero, the Microsoft of guns, but without the counterfeit protection, because he is Russian of course! Don't the EU and US love to support counterfeit goods - Yes if a Russian business is involved!
