Fuel addiction and the ethics of ethanol

The scarcity of fossil fuels and the threat to our climate from carbon emissions have focused attention on alternative energy sources. In recent years, biofuels have led the way.

Water is the new oil

Russia is considering becoming the world’s top supplier of fresh water as growing demand turns it into a strategic resource. That is if it can upgrade its own consumption to modern standards.

A much smaller change of mean temperatures may cause disastrous consequences, a new study into global warming said.

Made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the report says its previous assessment of threats posed by climate change was overly optimistic.

“Today, we have to assume that the risks of negative impacts of climate change on humans and nature are larger than just a few years ago,” said Hans-Martin Fussel, one of the authors of the report.

According to the document published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science on Monday, changes in average temperature smaller than the Panel’s assessments in 2001 and 2007 could lead to grave consequences.

Those included risks to threatened systems such as coral reefs or endangered species; and extreme weather events like cyclones, heat waves or droughts, reports Agence France-Presse.

The report said we can already witness the consequences. Some researchers suggested that “the likelihood of the 2003 heat wave in Europe, which led to the death of tens of thousands of people, was substantially increased by increased greenhouse gas concentrations.”

When the temperatures don't go up like the model predicts, just increase the predicted calamity to make every one worry over a lesser change. For the last ten years it has been cooling due to the reduced sun spot activity. This is not widely reported because it doesn't support the politically correct view of our climate. The sun spot cycle is expected to reverse in the next year or two causing a slight increase in global temperatures. You can bet that the Chicken Little crowd will cease this opportunity to advance their agenda. Just remember to check the sun spot activity and observe the direct correlation with temperatures before you blame it all on mankind. If Congress passes their Cap & Trade bill the greens won't be able to blame the U.S. for the problem because what few manufacturing jobs we have left in this country will move to China where pollution in accepted by their government as a cost of providing jobs for their billions of people. It is ironic that a country that is largely pollution free (if you grew up in the 50s & 60s you would know what pollution was really like) will have to ship all their jobs to the worst polluters on the planet. The greens will have actually made the world worse with their political nonsense.

the problem is political and scientific and is the real threat to the planet . The scientific community seems incapable to offer any solutions and the politicians prefer to ignor it. The collapse of the eco system is irreverssible. It will result heating of the oceans that will free more co2 into the atmospher .There is urgency for action not to stop further emmissins but to absorb co2 as suggested by James Hansen report (see www.gisss.com )

"We underestimated the risks ... we underestimated the damage associated with temperature increases ... and we underestimated the probabilities of temperature increases." -- Sir Nicholas Stern, author of "The Stern Report," April 17, 2008 "Few seem to realise that the present IPCC models predict almost unanimously that by 2040 the average summer in Europe will be as hot as the summer of 2003 when over 30,000 died from heat. By then we may cool ourselves with air conditioning and learn to live in a climate no worse than that of Baghdad now. But without extensive irrigation the plants will die and both farming and natural ecosystems will be replaced by scrub and desert. What will there be to eat? The same dire changes will affect the rest of the world and I can envisage Americans migrating into Canada and the Chinese into Siberia but there may be little food for any of them." --Dr James Lovelock's lecture to the Royal Society, 29 Oct. '07 There is a simple and cheap way to cool the Earth immediately: just add a little sun dimming aerosol to the upper atmosphere. "The alternative (to geoengineering) is the acceptance of a massive natural cull of humanity..." -Lovelock, Aug08
