Russian flying cars to beat traffic jams

Flying to work instead of driving might become a reality. An aircraft construction company in the Moscow region claims to have made it possible with its latest development, Sigma-5.

An American company developed such a aircraft/ car in the 1970s, called the BD5 and BD5J ( jet version ). There was another such aircraft add-on for cars too. The big question, will Russia's bad drivers be even worse as pilots?

The real problem is how will such flight be controlled and managed? You can't easily paint lines in the air and put traffic lights that hover anywhere that someone could drive. Flying cars create more problems than they solve. A much better solution would be an efficient small one person pod that takes you where you want to go on a road. People seem to want their own personal transport so make the pod small so you can fit more on the road. Some sort of automatic pilot system using Glonass and GPS so you can travel alone even if drunk or tired, and have a single standard model, one type for everyone in the city and perhaps another for longer trips on motorways for intercity travel and conventional cars for the back roads. The conventional cars would not be allowed in cities or motorways between cities as they could cause accidents themselves. The pods could be city owned so you could jump into any pod, though if someone has "fouled" a pod you can push a button to send it for cleaning and get into another pod. The system could be similar to the way bicycles are shared in some cities.

Try flying accidents, in addition to road accidents! These things will work only for the wealthy to take them from their city digs into their country home for weekends. But hopefully, no taxpayers funds will be used to promote this innovation, as it will serve only the elite.

To Norman Hill. You are an other well brainwashed (superiority-complex US dummy). The Russian firm who propose that small airplane do not pretend to be the first one to make that kind of transportation tool. As far as quality drivers: Do you think New-Yorkers and Californians drive well ? In an opposite manner, CNN will not publish such nonsense. Please say Thank You to RT...Best Regards... JCM

The rich already have flying cars... they are called Helicopters.

A very bad written news article a must say. Citing the description, the plane "is small and light enough to be parked and transported like a large car"; that doesn't mean that it is a flying car. Sure, the plane has folding wings (not shown in this video, but in available at http://freevideo.rt.com/video/3139), sure the prop is "fenced" by the tailbooms and horizontal stabilizer; but you can't run the engine with the wings folded, so you can't "drive" out to the roads. It may be the base for a flying car, like the new Terrafugia, but the Sigma-5 itself is just a plane. A very nice one indeed. Regarding accidents, there is no doubt that you must hold some kind of flying license to use it, so it is not for everyone. The worst trade-off is that if the plane is certified (instead of "Experimental") you must pay to an aircraft certified mechanic for even an scratch in the body got in the parking lot of a super or mall. No cheap at all.

For running on the ground direct power drive to the engine is much more efficient than using the prop to power movement. Disengage the main prop and engage a connection to the rear wheels for propulsion makes lots of sense if you really want to ride along a conventional road in this thing. Personally I prefer the concept of an autogyro than a conventional aircraft simply for safety reasons and for operating from a short strip.

Aside from all the bad drivers on the roads now, and the high cost of auto insurance...how is anyone supposed to be able to afford to travel to the corner store in their "personal aircraft" to get a quart of milk for breakfast?? A better means of travel would be to pursue the quantum "connectedness" in which actions at a distance influence matter which is "connected" at some distance away. In this way we could "commute" to work without leaving our homes and the boss could account for us being there. (this quantum affect has already been demonstrated on a small scale...now let's "ramp it up!")
