Clearing the road for eco-cars in Moscow

As Moscow's streets almost literally crack under the pressure of the moving masses, local government says that new, environmentally-friendly public transport is almost ready to hit the roads.
Yes, the Copenhagen summit is hypocrisy. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to reduce emissions, especially in a dense city where such emissions can cause lung problems and the like. Also, most of Russia's non-renewable power is generated from natural gas, which is far more energy efficient than burning petroleum in an internal combustion engine. The advantage is that this would put Russia at the cutting edge of energy technology, not a "poor stone age society". Nevertheless I agree with you that the focus should be on big industry, not transportation.
Why not install an electric streetcar system?
This can still be powered by such "alt fuels" as Russia proposes, or nuclear like its "nuclear train" ambitions of February 2011...oops.
But really, why not streetcars? Oh wait...we can't have egalitarianism in a new so-called "free market" society...
Too bad. Streetcars and trams are rather nice -- and last 100 years+ easily! Unlike a AvtoVAZ Lada.
As already “Artyom”, mentioned here, I'm too little bit sceptical about the benefit to the environment. The jury is still out there about this issue, but what I like about this little wonder is relatively small weight, because it's doesn't need the Geer, clutch and that stuff. The safety could be the issue to worry about, but the Big plus is definitely going to be the “not to worry” about the stiffness and cracked engine blocks, radiator in the freezing Russian conditions. I still have nightmares about starting my old Moskvich-407, with a crank-handle to the near fatal exhaustions. It certainly will be the top hit on the Russian car market.

Talking about education needed? This whole non-sense is out of control. Battery re-fill stations will increase power station consumption. What do you want to replace it? Coal Power Plants, that's real good, since the biggest polluters are big industry not the people. Don't forget the meeting at Copenhagen is the art of Hypocrisy as they had their private jets and thousands of gas guzzling limos driving around. They don't lead by example because this is about changing infrastructure, business, and new taxes. They don't care about the environment. IT isn't even proven we do have an affect on the environment enough to create disastrous global warming what they claim. Global Bureaucracy is being created that will dictate who can develop their nation and how. It is terrible. They talk about education, it is not education it is politicizing environmentalism to the point it is religion. And the News sources only play the tunes of those with power. Good luck with turning modern society into a poor stone age society in the name of Lord Gia!
